High Performance Photoluminescent (HPPL) Signs & Graphics
Visual Marking Systems was the first certified manufacturer of High-Performance Photoluminescent (HPPL) graphics in the United States. We have completed and passed outside testing to become a certified provider of all HPPL photoluminescent signs. All of our HPPL products will ship with proof of certification to be in compliance with APTA standards.
HPPL signage is an important standard throughout the American Public Transit Association (APTA) because it directly aids in the safety of passengers and crew. Our specially formulated HPPL is fully charged after only one hour of exposure to natural or artificial light and glows for hours in total darkness ensuring that all passengers and crew members are able to locate the nearest exit in the event of a power failure.
VMS' markings are fully compliant with FRA regulations as well as all smoke, flame and toxicity requirements. VMS's photoluminescent signs also exceed the APTA standard after 90 minutes in total darkness.
The APTA definition of HPPL is:
A photoluminescent material that is capable of emitting light at a very high rate and for an extended period of time. For the APTA standard, the minimum luminance value for HPPL is 7.5 mcd/m2, for 1.5 hours after removal of the charging light source. Unless otherwise permitted by this standard, for rating purposes, the charging light source required is a fluorescent lamp with a color temperature of 4000-4500°K that provides an illuminance of no more than 1 foot candle for a duration of no more than 1 hour.
Visual Marking Systems serves on the APTA board and has been an important influence behind the passing of several APTA standards regarding HPPL. Through our membership and involvement with APTA, we have stayed abreast on all new laws, regulations and information. This has directly assisted many of our customers with critical project planning.
