Public Transit Standards

American Public Transportation Association (APTA)

Visual Marking Systems actively participates in APTA Committees, to support the public transportation industry and to advise on areas of our expertise. We have helped to develop public transit standards used in the industry for passenger safety, including but not limited to:

• APTA RT-S-VIM-021-10 Emergency Signage for Rail Transit Vehicles
• APTA-PR-PS-S-002-98 Rev 3 Standard for Emergency Signage for Egress Access of Passenger Railroad Equipment
• APTA-PR-PS-S-004-99 Rev 2 Standard for Low-Location Exit Path Marking
• CFR49 Section238
• TransGrafix®

VMS’s HPPL decals and signage also exceeds the APTA standard for luminance that is required by the standards written above.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

According to the United States Department of Labor, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in employment, transportation, public accommodation, communications, and governmental activities. The Department of Transportation requires transit operators to make their systems accessible to persons with disabilities.

Visual Marking Systems understands the importance in providing all of our public transportation customers with the highest quality of care and safety. We work with your authority to make certain you become completely ADA compliant by incorporating raised letters, icons, and Braille that will communicate instruction and safety information for all travelers. Furthermore, Visual Marking Systems can provide ADA compliant signs to indicate designating seating areas for the disabled and wheelchair travelers. With our help, your authority can become ADA compliant and safe for all travelers. Ask about our on-site inspection assistance services.

The Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Federal Transit Administration (FTA), all have specific compliance and regulation requirements with regards to signage, emergency egress, Braille, HPPL and raised lettering products that VMS supplies. Our technical sales team is specialized in the public transportation industry and has helped to develop these standards. VMS is highly regarded among its APTA peers for consistently supplying public transportation with bus, rail and station graphics and components that meet the ADA compliance and regulations your authority is required to meet.

Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)

The FRA requires transportation authorities and railroads to implement egress programs for commuter rail, as well as establishing guidelines for fire safety. VMS is experienced providing HPPL egress signage & graphics, as well as flame retardant signs & markings.
